Behind The Lens
Location
This photo was taken in our living room when we used to live in Germany. My son, then 5 years old, was sitting in the sofa watching TV.Time
I wanted it to be a dark background so I waited until the evening. Taking advantage of the darkness in the room made it easier using spotlights to control the light sources I wanted to use.Lighting
I was taking a photo course at that time, and for one module we had to deliver photos with different type of lighting, and different angels of the light. On this occasion I was experimenting with lights coming from above. I had a dark background and then a small reading light placed over his head.Equipment
The equipment I used was my Canon 50D with a 50-200 mm lens and I had the camera on a tripod. The lighting was just a normal reading light.Inspiration
I knew I had to take a certain number of different lighting shots for my photo course and I was looking for different opportunities around my environment. When I saw my son looking at TV so peaceful I thought if I place a strong light over his head it could make a great photo.Editing
I usually don't do post-processing as I prefer the photos to be as natural as possible. I think it is a skill to be able to capture a moment with the camera without having to adjust it in the computer afterwards. For this photo I used the mono crome setting in the camera, and I haven't done any editing. In my camera bag
I only carry my Canon 50D with 18-270 mm lens. I take a lot of photos when I travel and I don't like to carry too much with me. The lens is a good all round lens.Feedback
When taking photos of kids. Try and make all the necessary adjustment of lighting and settings of the camera before you get the attention of the child. Children very easily get tired of being a photo model so once you start taking the picture you have to be quick, before they loose interest.
