Behind The Lens

Location

I took this in Miami's art district called Wynwood during Art Basel in 2010. I had just arrived and was on the way to an art gallery, when I spotted this work in progress.

Time

It was around noon when I came up to the artist working diligently on the mural.

Lighting

The weather cooperated, which is always a good thing when it comes to photographing subjects in natural light.

Equipment

This was shot using my Canon PowerShot SX IS100, I must have stood there watching him at work for a good five minutes before I found the perfect shot to take.

Inspiration

I wanted to get to Wynwood early enough in the day to catch some of the artists working on the many murals going up on the walls during Art Basel. This one caught my attention simply because of how he worked, and the colors of the piece were vibrant and fun.

Editing

I try not to do to much editing after the shot is taken, and for this one I used Photoshop to do a little cropping.

In my camera bag

My bag has the following: Canon PowerShot SX100 IS, a Pentax KX film camera, a few rolls of black and white film, color film, AA batteries for the Canon, granola bars, water bottle, headphones, and my sketchbook. Survival gear!

Feedback

Check your local art scene, every city has a neighborhood where local artists/galleries live and work. Secondly, wear comfortable shoes and have your camera ready. Like Henri-Cartier Bresson said, watch and wait for the perfect moment to capture an image, other than that, I say just have fun.
