Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo about a mile from my house in Oakley, California.

Time

This was taken around 4:00 PM in the afternoon.

Lighting

It was nice late afternoon sunlight with long shadows.

Equipment

I shot this with a Nikon D800 and a Nikkor 28-300mm lens.

Inspiration

I have seen these Burrowing Owls near my house and love the way they look. I was shooting two of them near their hole and all of a sudden one went in the hole and this guy flew away about 20 feet and landed. He kept rising up and down and making a funny noise. I caught him while he was upright. I think he was trying to protect his mate. I have never seen them upright like this and probably will never again.

Editing

I cropped this tighter and in portrait orientation. A little noise reduction and sharpening.

In my camera bag

I carry a Nikon D800 and a Nikkor 28-300mm lens.

Feedback

I was persistent by going back to this area to capture these owls and finally got this photo. It was well worth the effort. I love these little guys and this photo looks like he is trying to say something to me.
