I had the pleasure of being able to photograph this foal just a few days after its birth. This was a mare that had been rescued by friend of mine just a few weeks earlier and was unaware she was pregnant until just before the birth. Little guy was lucky to survive. Now robust healthy stud

This photo was taken in Lowell, a historical township in Everett Washington.Time
A friend of mine lived down in the valley about 1/2 mile me. He called me late in the afternoon to tell me that the filly had just had her foal sometime that night or early morning and that I should come down and get some photos him.Lighting
Because the foal was just born hours before I got there I wanted to make sure that I didn't spook the foal or the his Momma. I quietly moved along the side of the stall to see what would be my best lighting and angle since it was a cloudy day. As it turned out they seemed to want to pose for the photo shoot, especially the foal. So I was able to stand pretty much in front with lighting of the sun off to the side.Equipment
At the time I used my first digital camera which was a Olympus 510. This camera did not have an inter changeable lens.Inspiration
I was so excited to be blessed to be able to take this photo since the filly had actually been abandoned by its original owner. My friend rented out parts of the fields to horse owners and the Filly's owner was one of the renters. One day they just stopped coming by to bring hay and feed for her. Since the pasture was further back on the property and had a another driveway in my friend had no idea that the owner wasn't coming by any longer. Luckily he realized that he hadn't seen the owner for a while and went to check on the filly. It was then that he discovered she was pregnant. Also very thin. Her ribs were showing and he was unsure if she would make it through the pregnancy or if the foal would survive. So when he called me and they both made it through it wasn't just a photo of Mom and son, it was a photo of survival!Editing
I cropped the photo and may have adjusted the exposure just a little. This photo was taken in 2009.In my camera bag
Now I always have my Nikon D750, with the 24-120mm 1:4G lens, my Nikon 70-300mm zoom lens, the Nikon D7000 and it's standard lens. Sometimes I will take all the filters I have collected over the years if I think that I am going to want to do arty shots. Also the soft lens cleaning cloth and padded lens cases.Feedback
This photo was more about circumstances than how to capture it. But with any animal you have to respect them and their space. You need to size up the situation, the best angle to shoot from without disturbing the animals and I would recommend continuous shooting. You never know until you see those shots later what you really captured.
