I took this photo at Craighead Forest Lake in Jonesboro, Arkansas.Time
This was taken in January 2014 at 5:17 p.m.Lighting
The natural light provided by the sunset was all that was needed here. The heavy cloud cover provided a very diffuse light providing for nice silhouettes.Equipment
I used my Nikon D3200 with an 18-55mm lens. Because the clouds and light were changing so quickly, I shot this from inside my truck and used the window for stabilization.Inspiration
A sunset is one of my favorites subjects to photograph. I am captivated by the colors and light each one provides. This lake is less than a mile from my house and when I saw the intense colors and clouds, I rushed to the site to see if the lake mirrored the sky. I held my breath when I saw that the scene was exactly what I had hoped for, stopped in the road and took this from inside my truck because there was no time to set up equipment before all was gone. The lone kayaker was a bonus I had not expected.Editing
I bumped up the saturation only slightly. I didn't want to change anything else.In my camera bag
I carry two cameras at all times; a Nikon D7000, a Nikon D3200, two 18-55mm lenses, one micro lens, one 70-300mm lens, one 300-500 lens, a tripod, and my instruction manual (because I am very much the amateur).Feedback
I keep at least two cameras at the ready all the time for such an occasion as this. I saw the vivid sunset and had to make a hasty trip to the lake before it was gone. I took this photograph from the road sitting in my truck. My advice is to keep cameras ready and accessible, batteries charged, and cards with plenty of space available in the cameras. In other words.......be prepared when the unexpected presents itself and go for it!
