I took this photo of my six-month old granddaughter in the back yard of her home in Arkansas.Time
This was taken on June 21, 2013 at around 10:00 a.m.Lighting
The lighting wasn't ideal. It was a bright sunny June day, so I moved her around to shady areas as much as possible.Equipment
I used a Nikon D7000 at 55mm lens length. I did not use a flash, but think maybe I should have. I am still very much an amateur with a lot of learning ahead of me.Inspiration
My granddaughter had recently learned to sit alone, and of course I wanted to capture every new milestone in her development. I bought her the sunhat knowing it would make for a cute outdoor shoot. We went into the yard before the sun was too hot for her, and she was delighted to play on her blanket. That genuine delight is evident here, I think.Editing
Really, all I did was change the original color photo from color to black/white. I found it much more appealing because of her dark eyes. I'm not very knowledgeable when it comes to post-processing, and was pretty happy with what I had.In my camera bag
I use a Nikon D7000 and Nikon D3200; Nikkor lenses...ultra wide angle 10-55mm; 18-55mm; 70-300mm; and 300-500mm; tripod; one circular polarizing lens (that I just purchased for the wide angle lens); and being an amateur, I always carry my manuals.Feedback
As I stated, I am very much the amateur. With my grandchildren, I usually just sit, watch and shoot as much as possible. Usually I use a longer lens and stay out of the way in order to capture them looking as natural as possible. I love candid shots of children, but hope to learn more about portraiture.
