The wild turkey (Meleagris gallopavo) is an upland game bird native to North America, one of two extant species of turkey and the heaviest member of the order Galliformes. It is the ancestor to the domestic turkey, which was originally derived from a southern Mexican subspecies of wild turkey
An adult male (tom or gobbler) like the one in this image, normally weighs from 11 to 24 lb and measures 39–49 in in length. The adult female (hen) is typically much smaller at 5.5–11.9 lb and is 30 to 37 in. The wings are relatively small, as is typical of the galliform order, and the wingspan ranges from 4 ft to 4 ft 9 in.
The tail is also relatively long, ranging from 10 to 20. in.
The male is substantially larger than the female, and his feathers have areas of red, purple, green, copper, bronze, and gold iridescence.
