Built by Oil Mogul and completed in 1912, the 1,5 km overseas Railway bridge (“Flagler’s Folly” and the “Eighth Wonder of the World”) was partially destroyed by the tragic Labor Day Hurricane in 1935. In 1938 there was a road built on top of it. In 1972 it lost its function after a new road was completed. Today, visitors to the Florida Keys heading down the Overseas Highway toward Key West can view the only remaining segment of the steel bridge, the Bahia Honda Railway Bridge, between Bahia Honda Key (meaning deep bay) and Spanish Harbor Key.
