Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken in a marsh area adjacent to a preserve. Getting there is off the beaten path which I love to travel to get my captures.

Time

This was taken close to 9AM Eastern time.

Lighting

This was a very foggy morning which presented challenges with speed selection and having an f11 Canon lens, to get a capture that would have enough detail on the Great Blue Heron and the tall grass and letting the observer see the low laying fog.

Equipment

I used a Canon R7 with a fixed Canon 800mm f11 lens.

Inspiration

I loved the cool quite of the marsh with the fog adding an air of mystery. I saw other Great Blue Herons flying low and landing in the tall grass and decided to wait in this spot hoping to capture a low flying subject before it disappeared in the fog or the grass. It was a wait but these Great Blue Herons inspire patience when they are hunting in the water with how long they keep still waiting for their prey.

Editing

I used software to remove noise and then a built in default to remove atmospheric haze and improve the contrast

In my camera bag

I always have my Canon R7 with the 800mm f11 since I purchased it a few months ago. I also carry my Canon m50 with a Sigma Contemporary 150-600 if I know I will be out all day taking photos.

Feedback

Make sure you are shooting into the fog from the same direction as the sun and be patient.
