Behind The Lens

Location

I captured this picture on a winter day at a creek near home. The wind was biting cold and I had to operate the camera with thick gloves, sitting down in the snow beside the creek. To be honest, all I thought of was to come home to the warmth.

Time

It was midday, but the sky was overcast and it was very cold. The battery in the camera was almost dead and I had to pick it out of the camera and keep it in the shirt pocket and warm it with my body heat. This was the very last picture I got out of it before the camera died.

Lighting

In this case, I only used natural light. The biggest challenge was that the light was rather flat, but when I captured the image, I planned to fix it in post.

Equipment

This image was captured with a Canon EOS M. That camera was a little compact marvel with fantastic image quality, but the most sluggish autofocus you could imagine. It was so bad that I preferred to photograph stationary objects with a small aperture, i.e. perfect for this shot (1/15 sec, f/32, ISO 800).

Inspiration

When I walked by the creek, I saw some beautiful ice formations. The ice had formed around the tree branches and the strong flowing water had broken through in some places.

Editing

I like to sit and tweak my pictures in Photoshop, but in this case, it is almost straight out of the camera. All I did was lower the colour temperature and add some contrast and vignetting.

In my camera bag

I like to have light and compact equipment. When I do casual shooting, I usually just pack my R8 with my trusty RF 35mm f/1.8. When I do work, I use the equipment needed.
