Because of the long distance and the difficult path, the farmers of Lauterbrunnen built their own and only church in 1487, without consulting the provost and chapter in Interlaken. This led to a dispute between the monastery and its subordinates, which was settled by an arbitration award that recognized the church as a branch of Gsteig.
