This is the early morning of September 25th, 2023 - a remarkable night in which the Northern Lights danced over the Alps (if you don't believe it, please go to the Säntis webcam on roundshot.com, click on September 25th, 2023 in the archive and look at the pictures from 1:00 a.m. and 4:00 a.m.). I was in Iceland and there were thick clouds hanging over the entire country, and according to the forecast there was no hope of any major easing. I was outside around midnight - it was really pointless: thick gray clouds and an unpleasant wind. Afterwards I couldn't sleep and looked out the window again at half past two. I saw gaps in the clouds and in these green northern lights! So I quickly put on warm clothes and drove to Þjófafoss. Of course, by the time I got there, the lights I had seen from the window had disappeared, but there was still a slight afterglow, there was an arc of northern lights to the south (!), and all my apps indicated that the show wasn't over yet. So I held out with wind speeds of eight and around 4°C. During this time the gaps in the clouds became larger and larger until finally almost the entire sky was clear. The KP index was high, the IMF was well into negative territory and yet nothing was happening in the sky... The forecasts in all my apps alone kept me persevering. And then, at dawn, a spectacular show began! This is one of the last shots I was able to take before it got too bright.
