Behind The Lens

Location

The photo was taken at Snowshill not far from Snowshill Manor in the Cotswolds. The Lavender fields are a popular attraction and people come to see them from all over the UK.

Time

It was somewhere around 13.00 in the afternoon when this picture was taken.

Lighting

The Sun was right overhead and very bright. I know some photographers aren't keen on photographing at this time of day and under these lighting conditions; but for some reason it seems to have worked out well for this shot.

Equipment

The picture was taken on the Nikon D70s that I had at the time. I had on my Sigma 70-300mm zoom and at full out to 300mm focal length. I didn't need a tripod as the conditions were so bright. I used ISO 200, exposure 1/160s at F6.3 according to the meta data on the original raw file (I had to look it up because this picture was captured some time ago).

Inspiration

I just loved that brilliant red of the poppy amongst all that Lavender I focused on the poppy and I just loved the colour combination.

Editing

I didn't really need to do any post processing on this one. I liked it just the way it was.

In my camera bag

These days I use my trusty Nikon D5000, which I won in a prize draw in a photographic magazine. That was back in 2010 and I think I know the camera inside out now. It came with the Nikon kit lens that has built in VR and I still use that a lot. I have a Tamron 70-300mm zoom which has macro capability, and I have a Nikon 35mm Prime lens that I mostly use for portraits. I have a couple of old hot shoe flash units ( but I don't use these too often these days). I recently purchased a Variable ND filter and I also have a Cokin graduated ND filter that I break out to enhance the sky in my landscape work.

Feedback

Don't be put off by the bright afternoon light. I like to shoot in all kinds of lighting conditions. If it works; it works right?
