A brown, bee-like hover fly, which differs from bees due to its short antennae. The larvae live in all kinds of stagnant nutrient-rich to very nutrient-rich water, including slurry. The flies are everywhere. The species is characterized by the two vertical stripes on the eyes (actually hairbands). In flight, the hind legs hang down conspicuously.
