The Nodding Thistle is easy to recognize by the large heads with purple-red tube flowers, which are at the top of the long erect stems. These heads can be up to 7.5 cm wide. They usually stand alone on the barely branched stem and almost always bent to the side. The stem is winged with spiny edging. These frames are the continuation of the sessile scattered elongated leaves, which have a spiky leaf edge, just like the Curly Thistle.
