It is one of the largest pigeons of the world
The Sclater’s Crowned Pigeon is a “Columbidae”; it is one of the largest pigeons of the world, measuring 70 cm and able to weigh up to 2.5 kg.

Living exclusively in the mountainside forests of New Guinea, this bird is essentially terrestrial, as testified by its sturdy legs, round wings and short tail.

It browses the undergrowth in search of food, which consists of seeds and fruit as well as small animals fallen from trees or hidden in-between leaves.

Its blue, white and brown plumage is splendid but what distinguishes it most of all is its extraordinary crest of blue, fine and airy feathers, surrounding the top of its head like a crown.

The Sclater’s Crowned Pigeon was formerly a subspecies of the Scheepmaker’s Crowned-Pigeon.

Dit is een van de grootste duiven ter wereld
De Sclater Kroonduif behoort tot de familie van de “Columbidae”; dit is een van de grootste duiven ter wereld, met een lengte van 70 cm en een gewicht tot 2,5 kg.

Deze vogel leeft uitsluitend in bossen op de berghellingen van Nieuw-Guinea en is voornamelijk een landvogel, zoals blijkt uit zijn stevige poten, zijn afgeronde vleugels en zijn korte staart.

Hij doorkruist het onderhout op zoek naar voedsel, dat bestaat uit zaden, vruchten en kleine dieren die uit de bomen gevallen zijn of verborgen zitten tussen de bladeren.

Zijn blauwe, witte en bruine verenkleed is prachtig, maar wat hem vooral onderscheidt is een buitengewone kuif van blauwe, dunne en luchtige veren die zijn hoofd omgeven als een kroon.

De Sclater Kroonduif was vroeger een ondersoort van de Scheepmaker Kroonduif.

C’est un des plus gros pigeons du monde
Le Goura de Sclater est un Columbidae ; c’est un des plus gros pigeons du monde, mesurant 70 cm et pouvant peser jusqu’à 2,5 kg.

Vivant exclusivement dans les forêts à flancs de montagnes de Nouvelle-Guinée, cet oiseau a un comportement essentiellement terrestre, comme en témoignent ses robustes pattes, ses ailes arrondies et sa courte queue.

Il parcourt les sous-bois à la recherche de sa nourriture composée de graines et de fruits ainsi que de petits animaux tombés des arbres ou cachés dans les amas de feuilles.

Son plumage bleu, blanc et brun est magnifique mais ce qui le distingue surtout, c’est une extraordinaire huppe de plumes bleues, fines et aérées, entourant le haut de sa tête comme une couronne.

Le Goura de Sclater était jusqu’à récemment une sous-espèce du Goura de Scheepmaker.
