Behind The Lens

Location

I shot this Image off the southeastern tip of Klein Bonaire (dive location called “Joanne’s Sunchi”; i.e., Joanne’s Kiss) while staying for 2-weeks at The Plaza Beach & Dive Resort Bonaire, Kralendijk, Bonaire; an upscale luxury all-inclusive Beach & Dive Resort. I shot this Image on January 22, 2023 at around 2:30pm.

Time

It was mid-afternoon, about 2:30 pm, a bright sunny day with some scattered clouds.

Lighting

I was diving/shooting in approx. 30-40 ft. of water; with the sun shining overhead and behind me through the shallow water, giving diffused light, but not enough light for illumination or color. My 4th and current UW Photography system uses duel INON Z330 UW Strobes that extend 3 ft on each side. This shot it appears that I had the right strobe extended and pointed more to the white sandy seafloor (thus lighting the Banded Butterfly Fish with a diffused reflection of the strobe), while the left strobe was extended for side lighting. Most UW Photographers shoot Macro.... easier to control lighting; where-as I prefer to shoot Wide-Angle...... much more difficult to control lighting AND achieve uniform COLOR. This gave the Banded Butterfly Fish a little “pop” and highlighted the “subject”!

Equipment

Canon 5DM3 (35mm Full Frame Digital SLR) + Canon EF 24mm f/1.4L + Nauticam NA-5DMKIII Housing for Canon EOS 5D Mark III Camera + Nauticam 8.5 inch Acrylic Fisheye Dome Port + Nauticam 180 Degree Straight Viewfinder with External Diopter Adjuster + Duel (2) INON Z330 Underwater Strobes with Wide and Powerful Light w/Fiber Optic cables and internal flash trigger + Quad (4) Nauticam Carbon Fiber Aluminum Buoyancy Float Arms.

Inspiration

Colorful Tropical Fish and Sea Turtles are some of my fav subjects; AND the Images ARE ALWAYS GOOD SELLERS at the Outdoor Art Shows that I do!

Editing

I am a FIRM BELIEVER in getting everything you can correctly IN-CAMERA in the FIELD (this is almost ESSENTIAL when shooting Underwater!), and doing as little post-processing as possible! Having said that, I do the typical adjustments necessary with RAW Images.

Feedback

You FIRST need to get certified in SCUBA Diving.... then you need to STUDY & LEARN ABOUT UNDERWATER PHOTOGRAPHY & LIGHTING.... oh, and btw, NOT A CHEAP, INEXPENSIVE HOBBY OR PROFESSION!!! Good Luck! Know the places that you shoot, well; and shoot the places you know well.... often! -David
