Behind The Lens

Location

This Image was taken at King’s Mountain State Park near Blacksburg, SC (approx. 30 min. from Charlotte, NC) in the first week of November 2014.

Time

It was approx. 11:45 AM the first week in November; cool, but not cold. A typical nice Overcast Fall Day!

Lighting

It was a very Overcast Day with complete cloud cover; medium lighting, but not dark. Nice, even lighting.

Equipment

Canon 5DM3 (35mm Full Frame Digital) + Canon EF 50mm f/1.4 + Circular Polarizer Filter, + Oben CC-2481L Carbon Fiber Lateral Tripod + Oben BB-2 Ball Head.

Inspiration

I had planned on doing a Day Trip to shoot some Fall Colors at 2 different locations that day. My first stop was at King’s Mountain, and the second was at Freedom Park in Charlotte, NC. When I arrived at King’s Mountain, I drove through the Park and took some shots at the 1800’s Living History Farm located inside the Park. This is one of the paths leading to the The Living History Farm; which has a house and split-rail fence, barn, cotton gin, farm animals, blacksmith and weave shop, as well as a garden. This shot, with the Fall Colors was the perfect setting!!! When I left the Living History Farm, I traveled deeper into the Park and came across another location that I felt was a "MUST" for another addition to my shots (Email_Image_71_Kings Mtn St. Park)…. Another perfect Fall Color shot that I did not intend to pass up! In addition, and as an unfortunate side-note, as I was driving out of the Park heading to my next shoot at Freedom Park in Charlotte (all of my camera gear packed-up and in the trunk of my car); a flock of Wild Turkeys (approx. 2 dozen) came out of the woods and crossed the road right in front of me. I stopped, jumped out of the car to get my gear, but they were already gone back into the woods and down a steep ridge into a valley. Unfortunately, I could not follow.

Editing

I am a FIRM BELIEVER in getting everything you can correctly IN-CAMERA in the FIELD, and doing as little post-processing as possible! Having said that, I do the typical adjustments necessary with RAW Images.

Feedback

Fall Colors are sometimes difficult to time your shoot, especially if you are traveling some distance… you may not know if the Colors are at Peak or not. Shooting locally makes that a little easier. Know the places that you shoot, well; and shoot the places you know well.... often! -David
