Behind The Lens

Location

The 2017 Total Solar Eclipse - 08/21/2017 shot from Dreher Island on Lake Murray approx. 30min NW of Columbia, SC (dead-center within the Path-of-Totality of the Eclipse). I had planned this shoot and purchased a Ticket to set-up and shoot on the Island. Dreher Island State Park only sold/allowed 200 tickets/people access to the Island; and I bought mine 1 year in advance.

Time

My shots were recorded on 08/21/2017 during the entire sequential time of the Total Solar Eclipse; from Start: 1:01 PM EDT to End: 4:02 PM EDT.

Lighting

…..SPECTACULAR!!! (Compliments of Mother Nature).

Equipment

1. Canon 5D Mark III Full Frame Digital w/Canon EF 135mm + Canon 1.4X EF Extender II Teleconverter 2. Canon 7D Mark II Crop Frame Digital w/Canon EF 300mm ***(used for this single-shot of Totality). 3. Canon Rebel 2000 Full Frame Film w/Canon EF24mm + Fuji Superia X-Tra 400 4. All complimented w/Tripods, Solar Filters, and Remote Timers.

Inspiration

I have shot Partial Solar Eclipses and both Total and Partial Lunar Eclipses; but not a Total Solar Eclipse.

Editing

I still shoot Film occasionally. When I do, I have the film developed; in this case Fuji Superia X-Tra 400, then use my NIKON COOLSCAN 4000 ED FILM SCANNER to digitize the images in order to post-process the results. I am a FIRM BELIEVER in getting everything you can correctly IN-CAMERA in the FIELD, and doing as little post-processing as possible! Having said that, I do the typical adjustments necessary with Digital Images.

In my camera bag

Cameras: Canon 5DM3 (35mm Full Frame Digital), Canon Rebel 2000 (35mm Film), Battery Grips for both Cameras, Canon TC-80N3 Intervalometer Timer Remote Controller, SanDisk Extreme Pro CompactFlash Cards, SanDisk Extreme Pro SD Cards. Underwater: Nauticam Underwater Housing for Canon 5DMIII, Duel Inon Z330 Underwater Strobes, Ikelite Underwater Housing for Canon Rebel 2000, Duel Ikelite SS-200 Underwater Strobes, Nikonos V Underwater Camera, Ikelite SS-200 Underwater Strobe, Nikkor 20mm f/2.8, Nikkor 35mm f/2.5. Flash: Canon Speedlite 550EX, Polaris Digital Light Meter. Filters: Polaroid Circular Polarizers, Polaroid Neutral Density Filters, Polaroid Graduated Neutral Density Filters, Polaroid Variable Neutral Density Filters ("Black Glass"), B+W NL-4 Close-up Diopter, UV Haze. Additional: BlackRapid RS-7 Curve Camera Strap, Giottos Rocket Air Blower, Microfiber cloths.

Feedback

All prior shots leading up to and following the Time-of-Totality require the Solar Filters to be over-the-lens, and need to be removed during the Time-of-Totality, then replaced as Totality begins to end (hopefully without moving or shaking the tripods/cameras/lens. The total Time-of-Totality only lasted 2:30 sec.; so……… you had better be ready & prepared! Good Luck! Know the places that you shoot, well; and shoot the places you know well.... often! -David
