Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken in a small flower bed in our front yard in North Kansas City, Missouri.

Time

The photo was taken in the mid-morning hours of the day.

Lighting

The flower bed faces East in our yard so the light coming in is sometimes direct or filtered through the tree just in front of the flowerbed.

Equipment

This particular image was captured, handheld with a Sony ILCE-7RM3 full-frame mirrorless camera and a Tamron 28-200mm F2.8-5.6 Di III RXD lens. All natural available light.

Inspiration

We have several Asiatic lilies planted in our flower bed. When the flowers are in bloom they are quite majestic and elegant in appearance. The colors are striking in appearance. Even though the flowers are beautiful in full color, I wanted to give the image a more fine-art appearance.

Editing

This photo was processed in Lightroom CC. In my mind, I wanted to achieve a fine art appearance so I just played with some different B&W presets and tweaked the image till I was satisfied with the result.

In my camera bag

I mainly shoot with a Sony ILCE-7RM3 full-frame mirrorless camera and a Tamron 28-200mm F2.8-5.6 Di III RXD lens. I also use a Canon 7DMII with a Canon Zoom 10-22mm 1:3.5-4.5 USM (ultrawide zoom). I also use a Canon EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS II USM on both the Canon and the Sony (with adaptor).

Feedback

I try to take time to notice smaller details in things we sometimes normally take for granted, like flowers. Instead of taking a "snapshot" of the item, I look for a different approach to seeing the flower. Macro photography allows for a different perspective of an item and B&W photography removes any distraction of color and helps the viewer focus on other aspects of the photo.
