Behind The Lens

Location

I was in the Atlanta, GA area for my son's wedding and came across this area known as Krog Street Tunnel (1 Krog St. NE, which is pretty near downtown Atlanta. The photo does not represent the most popular aspect of the Krog Steet tunnel, that being the ever-changing urban canvas of images, words, and ideas of graffiti artists.

Time

The day was pretty much a washout for my plan of exploring downtown Atlanta because of the significant rain. I knew after seeing this tunnel earlier in the week I had to come back and explore it more. This photo was taken around 1 pm. April 8th, 2023. The tunnel is a pedestrian walkway going under a busy road and train tracks. With the rain, many people just kept their umbrellas open while going through the tunnel.

Lighting

The lighting is all available lighting with fluorescent lighting overhead and natural lighting at both ends of the tunnel. I took advantage of the natural lighting to achieve the silhouette of the pedestrian against the opening of the tunnel.

Equipment

My camera this particular day was the Sony A7RIII with a Tamron 28-200mm F/2.8-5.6 Di III RXD. 1-200 sec at f5.6, ISO 8000, 200mm, handheld. This camera is my first foray into a full-frame mirrorless camera. I choose the Tamron lens for its speed and versatility.

Inspiration

The day was dreary and wet and I knew I wanted to convey that in this image. I worked with a couple of different color versions and ultimately decided that B&W would be the ideal medium. Ideally, a wet tunnel would have helped with the dark mood I was trying to portray, but I think it turned out pretty well.

Editing

I worked with a number of Lightroom presets and tweaked them until I was happy with the results. Additionally, I did not want the person to be identifiable which I was able to accomplish with high contrast, B&W post-processing.

In my camera bag

When I switched from medium format (Mamiya RB67) and 35mm (Canon A-1) I chose to stay with Canon. I had a Canon EOS 40D with a kit lens. I also purchased a 10-22mm ultrawide zoom which I personally love. I parted with the 40D and then went to an A7MII. I usually made most of my images with the ultrawide zoom but then became more interested in outdoor nature/wildlife imaging. While in New Mexico several years ago I attended the Annual Festival of the Cranes in which several photography vendors were present. I purchased a Canon Zoom Lens 100-400mm 1:4.5-5.6 L IS II lens to use on the Canon body. I have quite a bit of money invested in this lens and so I purchased an adaptor for my E-mount Sony and use that successfully with the Sony. So, for an average shoot, I will use my 7DMII with the ultra-wide lens and the Sony Tamron combination. I will carry both using a Corio double strap which works out very well for me. If I know I need more telephoto than what the 28-200mm Tamron will provide I'll also bring the 100-400 zoom in a hard case. I seldom do flash photography as most of what I shoot does not require it. If shooting for my church flash photography is not used (I have a Canon Speedlite if needed).

Feedback

I knew I had plenty of time to capture images on this particular day. I looked online to see what other photographers came up with so as not to repeat what I have seen. Sure, I did capture a lot of graffiti images which, for some, may look all the same...they were still something new for me. I spent 1-2 hours in this area and made it a point to be near the entrances to capture people coming through the tunnel. When this individual walked through still carrying their umbrella, I just knew I could something with that. Have patience and take a lot of images. Look for a different perspective and think in terms of more than just a snapshot or vacation images. Shoot from a higher or lower point-of-view for maybe a more dramatic effect. Have a final image in mind while shooting.
