The viper ( Vipera berus ) or Adder is a venomous snake belonging to the viper family.
The snake is found in almost all of Europe.
It is the only venomous snake that occurs in the Netherlands.
Its toxicity is often overestimated, the viper is not nearly as dangerous as, for example, the mambas , the cobras or the more related rattlesnakes . The bite of the viper can be dangerous to humans, but although dozens of viper bites are recorded every year, fatal cases are extremely rare. The viper becomes about fifty to seventy centimeters long.

Cool and dangerous snake, Joop! Looks like an earthworm...kind of. Do you have these in your back yard?

Thank you, it was just a baby, but indeed already dangerous. Found this one in the forest.

Nice photo! However, the reptile is not an Adder (Vipera berus), it is a Common Slowworm (Anguis fragilis), which is actually a type of legless lizard. Note the tail shape, un-keeled scales, and partially regenerated tail stub.
