Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken in a Philippine Festival called "caracol", the spanish word for snail shell, a freshwater shellfish that can withstand harsh conditions. The Caracol festival is an ode to Filipino resilience.

Time

This was shot at mid-afternoon, right before the streetparade was about to start. Just then, dancers would be preparing to launch into their street parade routine. A simple smile and a request for this dancer to pose for my camera was rewarded with this brilliant smile.

Lighting

Nothing extraordinary, shot only using ambient light and correct specs on the camera.

Equipment

Shot with a mirrorless fujifilm camera and a native medium telephoto lens.

Inspiration

I look for vibrant and happy faces in the crowd when shooting during festivals. Festivals in the Philippines are celebrations of life. I am inspired by a simple smile anywhere; it's a universal language that assures us that life is beautiful.

Editing

Post-processing was done in Adobe Camera Raw and Photoshop; played on the contrast, highlights & shadows, and enhanced the details/structure/clarity, to create this "black and white, in color" interpretation.

In my camera bag

As a travel photography enthusiast, who shoots a variety of subjects and themes, I always carry two bodies with trinity lenses - ultra wide for landscapes (10-24 or 8-16mm), all-around weather sealed medium lens (16-55 or 16-80mm) and a telephoto (50-140mm or 70-200mm equivalent in my cropped sensor mirrorless camera). I also carry a basic filter set and a lightweight tripod, when I know that I will be shooting long exposure landscapes.

Feedback

When shooting in festivals, first observe and learn the environment. Walk around a bit until you find your most enticing subject/s. then make some new friends and shoot.
