Behind The Lens

Location

Pobitora, Assam, India.

Time

Afternoon, about 1 PM.

Lighting

This photograph was taken indoors in natural light in a small homestay lounge. The light wasn't very good. I tried to take the photo with the flash but the painting was getting washed out. I waited until afternoon to let some more natural light enter into the area. There were some hard shadows so I had to choose an angle which would minimize them. The space was cramped and didn't leave me much room to move around. After some experimentation, this was the result.

Equipment

Canon PowerShot SX 400 IS.

Inspiration

The beautiful somewhat old painting by an obscure, unknown painter adorning the brick wall of a simple homestay. Under the photo was a narrow table with some scattered books and the ambience was one of serenity, calmness and tranquility. The setting seemed to send out an invitation to pause for a moment, gaze at the painting and rifle through the slightly musty pages of the books, inhale the unique fragrance that only books can have, and seemed to say that the day ahead would be lazy and relaxing.

Editing

No, only cropping and adjusting the contrast.

In my camera bag

Canon PowerShot SX 400 IS, my constant companion. I also have a Canon 200D II 24.1 MP DSLR with EF-S 18-55mm is STM lens, EF-S 55-250mm is STM lens, Tamron A17E AF 70-300mm F/4-5.6 Di LD macro telephoto lens EF-S 10-18mm F/4.5-5.6 is STM zoom lens, which I carry along, if I am travelling.

Feedback

I stepped in late into the world of photography, therefore am skeptical that I achieve mastery in this lifetime for various reasons. Hence the only choice I am left with is to do the best with what I have. My gallery is proof of my self-learning and self-teaching and how hard I try, as I see myself move up from where I started until now. Viewbug has inspired me to always give my best. I take photos all the time, everyday and of everything. I see an opportunity in every frame and every shot. I see beauty all around. I could be taking 7-10 photos of the same scene and one turns out to be how I had envisaged it. If I allow an opportunity to slip away, it's lost forever in time. Rather, I try to see what's the best that can be done in a less than ideal situation as in this image. Sometimes, I feel awkward, sometimes self-conscious, sometimes shy but I continue to push myself because otherwise maybe my masterpiece is gone in the blink of an eye?
