Location
I've always been fascinated with Dandelion fluff. This particular spring it seemed to be constantly windy, so I decided to bring a few seed heads inside. With a tweezers I carefully stuck one single seed into a bit of sticky tack (used to put up posters on walls without leaving marks) in a small dish. I put just enough water to cover the tack and set it in front of a solid light blue background which also reflected in the water. (I have several different color backgrounds that I use for my macro.) Then I lightly sprayed a little fine mist onto the seed. I took lots of different photos that day with various backgrounds, but this is my favorite.Time
I do my shooting mostly in mid day as I have a large bay window that lets in a lot of light. Setting up on a table a little back from the window, allows for bright light without direct sun during this time of day.Lighting
Soft, natural light is my favorite light for macro work. Even overcast days will do quite well.Equipment
I use a Canon Rebel T5i on a tripod with a 100mm Tamron macro lens that I have had for years. It is an older model with a resessed front element so it has stayed pristine. No flash was used but I have pop-up reflectors and difussers that I use when needed.Inspiration
I saw a video where someone used a similar method to take photos of single dandelion seeds and decided to give it a try.Editing
I do minimal post-processing in an old version of Photoshop; basic color correction, light sharpening and straightening, sometimes a little cropping. In my camera bag
Camera, 1 or 2 extra lenses, a few filters, my pop-up reflectors & difussers, x-tra batteries, notebook, lense cloth, and a travel tripod straped to the bag.Feedback
Don't be afraid to try something new! I took dozens of shots this day, and came away with maybe 6 shots I really liked. Just keep shooting!
