Alligators are the most vocal of all reptiles. Even though they do not have vocal cords, they manage to make all sorts of noises like growling, hissing, roaring, and chumpfing (a cough like sound). They can make these noises by sucking air into the lungs and then blowing out that air intermittently, which helps to create the desired sounds.
