Fira, the capital of Thera (Santorini) is largely constructed on the cliffside facing the caldera - what's left of a colossal volcano that literally blew its top during the Minoan eruption around 1600 BC. The buildings constructed on the cliffsides are actually cave houses, built that way because it was cheaper for those living in poverty to use the caves that were already there for housing.
