Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photograph from my kitchen window. I opened it up when I saw the Cardinal perched on my deck in my back yard. Several photographs were taken.

Time

At 4:15pm Eastern Standard time facing east on my property.

Lighting

There was natural afternoon sunlight coming from the west.

Equipment

I used a Nikon D3400 with a Nikkor AF-P DX 70-300mm f:/4.5-6.3G ED VR lens and the laced my elbow in the open window frame

Inspiration

I call the series of images from this, the cardinal project. I made a few earlier attempts to photograph the bird. When I open my patio door my dogs come to be let out so the bird flew away. So when I saw it from the window, this was a good opportunity. I’ve seen other photographic works on viewbug and social media and thought I’d attempt an image or two. It was a challenge for me thinking about the bird being elusive, and me thinking that I’m going to do this and make it happen.

Editing

Very minor simple adjustments with highlights, shadows & saturation. I use Snapseed on my phone to edit most photographs. I’m without a computer at the moment. I usually use Nikon NX-D software.

In my camera bag

I have a DSLR backpack I bought on Amazon. I carry my Nikon D3400 with a Yongnuo YN 685 speedlite & controller, speedlite gels, Nikkor 50mm f:/1.8G, the 70-300mm lens mentioned earlier, a GVM RGB light panel, Tascam DR-05X audio recorder, lav mic, batteries, chargers, 12inch mini reflector, Manfrotto Pixi Tripod, spare SD cards

Feedback

The best thing I can say is to keep the ISO low. The higher it is, you lose detail in the feathers and face. Take as many images as possible. The photograph was taken at 300mm and the subject was far from the trees in my back yard which helped to isolate the subject.
