Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo in Milan. This is "Il Duomo" one of the most beautiful cathedrals in the world. As part of Italy, Milan is a city of great gastronomy, beautiful people, a center of fashion and architectural heritage. It is a very culturally rich place.

Time

I took this photo around 5 p.m, before sunset. The sun iluminated the Cathedral while the surroundings were in the shade. The marble from which "Il Duomo' is made reflected the light, so the Cathedral looked more shiny and holy.

Lighting

I am a beginner photographer. I am still understanding and learning how to manage light in photographs. But somehow, the scene was already set for me to take the picture. The angle from which the light was coming from the sun in the afternoon and the shades.

Equipment

This photo was taken with a Canon PowerShot SD750. (No other equipment was involved).

Inspiration

"Il Duomo" is one of the most beautiful cathedrals in the world. It is both: a sacred place and a architectural wonder. As a gothic creation it was made with marble many centuries ago. It has many sculptures and how it was carved gives me a sense of embroidery. Although I am a fan of art, architecture or city photography is not my focus. I always liked to photograph Nature and the natural world. But the Duomo is very special, it invites you to photograph it. Many photographers have taken pictures of it from many angles. You just do not get tired of it. Every angle is just a piece of art. It was 5 pm the rays of the sun were iluminating the cathedral, the scene was just inviting me to take the photo.

Editing

As a beginner photographer I use the snapseed application to edit my photos. This photo was originally in colors, I edited it and made it black and white. I just love black and white photos, they give that antique touch. I increased the contrast, brightness and shades so that the white of the Cathedral would stand out, surrounded by the shades. I also increased the structure of the image so that the architectural details of the cathedral would be shown.

In my camera bag

I am new to photography, I always have my samsung cellular phone in my bag. My cell phone is my camera. (I no longer have the camera I used to take this photo). I hope as my photographic journey continues and I learn and improve, I will acquire more sophisticated equipment.

Feedback

My advice to others taking photos of architecture, is that it is important to choose the angle. Different angles of the architectural building will create different art pieces. Another factor to choose the angle is the light. In my case I chose to show the whole cathedral since the sun was iluminating its facade.
