An early morning hiking to find interesting subject for photography at Al Marmum desert near Qudra lakes in Dubai U.A.E. Walking in the desert is tricky and challenging. However it is rewarding for a photographer who wants to see a different subject and perspective. Along the way I saw some foot prints in the Sand Dunes and I tried to follow it's trails. During up and down of hiking on loose sand, I feel tired and decided to take rest and sit on the sand. Then I watch the area around me, from a distance this 3 Arabian Gazelles emerge from above watching their way. While holding my camera I poke and focus into this 3 animals and got this beautiful shot.

Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken in Al Marmum Desert Area with a vast sand dunes near Al Qudra lakes in Dubai UAE.

Time

Very few will wake-up early at 3:30 AM and start traveling at 4:00 AM to reach Al Qudra lakes at 5:00AM and still it was dark. Then I walk alone towards the deep desert without using any light to avoid this animals of seeing someone in the area. That's how crazy I am to get a bit closer photos of this animals with acceptable light and good background.

Lighting

If you experience how walking on the loose sand is. That is all I did wearing camouflage hiking up and down the hills of sand dunes to reach the south eastern part for a nice lighting position and point of view of this animal’s image. Before 6:00 AM I have to stop walking where ever I am. Take a bit of rest before setting up my equipment and position my camera facing where I came from. It is because this animals are coming from the lake area where I started. At past 6:00AM they will go back to desert and start walking towards Me to stay away from people visiting the lakes. This will be that chance to get a nice picture of them.

Equipment

I use two cameras D810 and D500 with 200-500 f5.6 and 70-200 f2.8 Nikon lens. I also use two mini tripod the Rollei Compact Traveler Mini M-1 and the small MeFoto A0320, this is to avoid too heavy load when hiking over the loose sand and I can position myself as low as possible to avoid this animals from noticing Me in the area. I only depend on the early morning ambient light for my wild life photography.

Inspiration

When I discover this nice looking animal, I was in love with their smart looking posture and the habitat where they are living. And besides there are unlimited positions and actions I can capture. however, you cannot tell them what pose you want for them to get that nice photos. There are varieties of nice background with different light temperature everyday, this all inspires me in taking this photos.

Editing

I do post processing to enhance the image of my photograph's color and lighting condition. The time of capturing the image is very critical, mostly sunlight is still not enough but the subject is already there to be shot, or else I cannot capture that nice action. Hence, I am forced to push the trigger and capture the action and the importance of post processing is always there to produce the required image we want.

In my camera bag

I use to carry two Nikon cameras the Nikon trinity lenses for a chance to capture the beauty of early morning sunlight also, graduated ND filters and reverse ND filters since this can be used while waiting for the real subject to come. Mini tripod is very important to help me hold the camera while sometimes I'm slipping down the sand dunes during the time of shooting. I also bring shutter release cable, extra memory cards and camera batteries as well.

Feedback

Anyone who may want to achieve similar with this photo. I may advise to consider doing a location survey first. Understand the attitude of the animals, their movements and time of activity. Are they too shy to see people? you may consider to wear the proper clothes, it may require a camouflage. Find out how to get into the right position to achieve the dream shot. Bring enough patience always and be at the right time in that right place.
