Behind The Lens
Location
I live in the small village of Carn Brea in Cornwall. At the top of hill is a hunting lodge now converted to a restaurant. Strewn around the lodge is various large boulders. This was taken on an outting with the local camera club.Time
From memory this was taken mid afternoon on a Saturday.Lighting
It was a very overcast day with very little colour. I can hear our camera club chairman, no colour, turn it into a black and white photo for a more of a dramatic effect. Exposure bracketing or expose for the sky.Equipment
It was taken on my Nikon D500 with my go to 70-210 zoom. Lens hood always on. Tripod was a given. Always have a poloriser filter on the front, gives me the option of using it or not depending on the conditions. It will also give more impact to a photo whether its colour or black and white.Inspiration
It's very close to home but a very challenging climb to the hunting lodge. I tried to portray how bleak and isolated it was. This composition seemed the most appropriate to portray the mood.Editing
I rendered it to black and white. Processed it from the raw file. Usual work flow. Open the shadows, reduce the highlights to bring out the sky. A bit of contrast, reduced the exposure to create the mood. I try not to over process but represent what I saw on the day.In my camera bag
Essential is my nikon D500 my 70-210 zoom. Tripod, either my gorillapod or my larger lightweight travel tripod. ND filter assortment. Polarising filter.Feedback
Experiment with various compositions. Take care of the depth of field and f.stop. Expose for the sky. Histogram left biased but look at the right biased to ensure maximum detail. Try something different. Different prospective, put yourself out of your comfort zone. Create your own unique style.
