Behind The Lens

Location

This photo is taken from the balcony of the Austonian High-Rise in downtown Austin, Texas. I had been shooting the building for an advertising spot and asked if I could get on the roof to take a shot down congress. Since the roof was not in the cards, the awesome crew at the Austonian took me to an unfinished floor at the penthouse and let me shoot from the balcony there. Amazing, view from a fantastic building.

Time

This shot is around 7 PM, the sun is setting, and the glow of Congress Avenue starts to emerge. A great view down congress to the Texas State Capital along with the University of Texas in the distant background

Lighting

Mother nature at her finest. I did nothing but set up on my tripod and wait. No adjustments or filters (except a soft vignette added in post). I am TERRIFIED of heights but will do damn near anything for a great shot. I was asked to photograph the building for a magazine ad and asked if I could shoot from its highest point down congress as a part of the shoot. This was the result. The wind on the balcony was terrible (the guard rails weren't up yet), so I didn't go out to the edge. The view is amazing from this side and offers a unique perspective of an incredible city below.

Equipment

Nikon D700, Nikkor 24-70mm f2.8 lens. RRS Tripod, Nikon cable release.

Inspiration

I love architecture, I like looking up and looking down at the city below. This was an excellent combo for me as I got to shoot the building for the magazine and got a fantastic view of the city below to wrap up the day. Austin is a beautiful city, especially at night. This shot captures the city coming to life in the early evening.

Editing

Basic color correction was done in this shot with a bump of warmth so the lights would have a punchy yellow to them. Beyond that, sharpening and a vignette were added to center the focus of the shot down congress.

In my camera bag

I am a 100% Nikon shooter. All of my cameras are Nikon, and all of my glass is Nikkor glass. I shoot with a Really Right Stuff tripod and ball head, and use Lee filters on occasion (for long exposures).

Feedback

In photography, perspective is EVERYTHING when you find a subject to shoot, look at it from every angle. Highs to lows, up and down. You will be amazed at home by many amazing shots one thing can offer you when looking at it from various vantage points and perspectives.
