Behind The Lens

Location

I captured this photo in a local park (in Swift Current, Saskatchewan Canada).

Time

I took this photo at 3:48PM CST (2006 May 20).

Lighting

The sun was shining off and on during the shoot (as it was threatening rain.) I do not remember if it was full sun when I captured this photo.

Equipment

I shot this photo hand-held with my point-and-shoot camera - a Nikon COOLPIX S4 V1.0. The camera was set in Automatic exposure mode. The settings the camera automatically used for this photo were f/3.5 1/210 ISO 50. Automatic White Balance, Exposure 0 step, focal length equivalent to 172 mm, Pattern Metering. White Balance set at "Automatic". Centre-weighted Average Metering mode.

Inspiration

It was our daughter's wedding so I was shooting a few snapshots so they would have some other photos in addition to those captured by the wedding photographer.

Editing

This photo was shot in JPEG. I used ACDSee Pro 6 to convert to Black and White. I did not do any adjustments.

In my camera bag

I have my Nikon D750, D200 and D5100 cameras in my bags along with my Nikon AF-S 70-200mm f/2.8G ED VR II, a Tamron SP 24-70MM F/2.8 Di VC USD, a Nikon AF-S Nikkor 50mm F/1.8G Lens, a Tamron 18-400mm f/3.5-6.3 Di II VC HLD Lens, Nikon f/2.8 105mm Micro f/2.8 lens, and a Sigma 150-600mm f/5-6.3 DG OS HSM Contemporary Lens. I also always have my Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra cellular phone with me (I like to use it when I want or need a wider angle photo.) If I am going to go for a drive to spend some time out and about shooting, I like to take all my cameras and lenses... you just never know what you're going to need. If I am going out to shoot something specific, I take my Nikon D750 along with the 70-200mm lens, 24-70mm lens, 50mm lens, and depending what my shooting goal is, sometimes the 105mm lens.

Feedback

My first advice would be to take time to get to know and understand the camera you are using. I received the Nikon Coolpix S4 camera (that I was using for this wedding photograph) the afternoon before the wedding so was not familiar with how the camera would operate in various conditons. It was replacing a film camera that had stopped working, so being the only camera I had available, I had to take a chance and hope at least some of the photos would turn out with a camera I only had in my possession for less than 24 hours (and being the mother of the bride, I did not have time to familiarize myself with the camera, before it was time to use it.) My general advice for others is to keep your batteries charged up, keep your camera(s) handy (you never know when an opportunity to shoot will arise), and to appreciate everything around you and to always look for photo opportunities. . Then shoot, shoot, shoot.... shoot as often as you can. Look for photo opportunities everywhere including in your own home and/ or yard, and at private and public events. Try to take advantage of the lighting - when it is sunny or when it is cloudy or if rain or any other weather system is moving in, and play with your f stops. Take more than one photo... you can always delete them if they do not turn out. My advice is to try different camera settings, cameras and lenses as well. My most important advice of all is to pick up your camera(s) and go out and have fun!!
