I took this photo the day before a wedding shoot in the Edison Hotel in New York City.Time
This was taken in the eveningLighting
There was nothing extravagant about the lighting setup. In fact, there wasn't one at all. This image was taking utilizing an overhead spot light fixture that was in the ceiling.Equipment
I used my Nikon D7000 with a 24-70mm f2.8 lens.Inspiration
Since it was the night before a wedding, everything that we do in preparation for a wedding or shoot is tightly choreographed. Everything goes according to a schedule. So since we were keeping an eye on our time, I looked over and saw my team checking their watches. It gave me the sense of how nerve racking it must be for the groom. To watch every second tick by in high anticipation. So we wanted to recreate that feeling. That feeling of anxiety of waiting. Watching time. It's funny that time is a strange thing. It's a constant. There's always so much of it, but never enough and at other times...too much.Editing
The only thing we did in terms of post processing for this was to increase the contrast a bit, because we wanted to feature the watch. That was the point of interest. And also put a slight vignette around the image to further accentuate the contrast. In my camera bag
Nowadays I have one solid go to suitcase and my lighting bag. Those two bags have everything that I need to get any job done. In my suitcase I'm sporting a Nikon D750, and two (2) Nikon D7000 bodies. 24-70mm f/2.8, 70-200mm f/2.8, 105mm f/2 macro, 24-120mm f/4g. Nikon SB5000, Nikon SB900. fStoppers Flash Disk Diffusion Panel, Rogue Flash Bender. Pixel King Remote Trigger System, Pocket Wizard Remote Trigger System. Assortment of memory cards, flash gels, batteries, lens cloths and tools. My lighting kit includes two (2) Dynalite UNI400JR flash heads. Two (2) silver black umbrellas. Two (2) softbox umbrellas. Two (2) light stands, all necessary power cables and accessories.Feedback
Just shoot away. You never know what you're going to get. But I go back to what my father told me when I first started to get into photography. And that was to tell a story with your picture. What's going on? What's the meaning behind it? Don't take a picture simply because it visually looks good. There are plenty of those out there. But to tell a unique story is what makes you a great artist; to be able to utilize the art of photography with the tools that you have on hand to tell a story. How should you go about capturing something similar? You just need to look.
