Location
This photograph was taken from an apartment on the 72nd floor of the Princess Tower, located in the Dubai Marina. The apartment afforded stunning views over the entirety of the marina, and greater Dubai due to it being located on a very high floor.Time
This shot was taken around golden hour. The sun had just crossed the horizon, but the sky and clouds were still illuminated with the stunning colours. The blue in the sky adds a great contrast to the bright oranges of the sunset and the city lights.Lighting
This type of shot can be quite difficult to time, as you want the ambient light from the sun to be low enough that the city lights are able to punctuate the scene without either being particularly blown out. It is something you have to play around with and keep shooting constantly as the sun goes down, and into the blue hour until you get the perfect marriage between ambient and city lights.Equipment
This photo was shot with a Sony a7RII with a Sony Vario-Tessar T FE 16-35mm on a tripod with nothing else fancy. The tripod was rested against the balustrade of the balcony to prevent the relatively high wind speeds from shaking it.Inspiration
I have always been fascinated with night-scape city shots especially in bustling modern cities. I live in Johannesburg, South Africa, and am not fortunate enough to have these stunning city skylines that sprawl across a landscape, with towering buildings that have the vantage points to photograph such angles. So when I most recently visited Dubai, I was lucky enough to stay in a place that allowed me the opportunity to photograph this perspective of a city, coupled with the absolutely perfect lighting from the sunset and ambient city light, it makes one of my favorite photos in my portfolio.Editing
I have done very minimal post-processing to this photo. I always take my RAW photos into Lightroom, where I slightly tweak and balance the colours, highlights and shadows. I then took this photo into Photoshop, where I used Nik Collection to apply micro-contrasts and sharpening. In my camera bag
My bag is normally filled with the Sony a7RII, the Sony Vario-Tessar T FE 16-35mm, the Sigma 24-105mm F4 ART, coupled with the Sigma M-11 Converter. I also have a Godox flash and a number of filters in my bag.Feedback
My advise would be to try and scout places to stay or visit before going to the city. If possible find a place with a publicly open balcony or a place that you can rent through AirBnB that has amazing views over a city or location. It is also extremely important to be patient and keep shooting through the sunset and into the blue hour so that you can find the best photo to use that compliments ambient light with city light.
