Behind The Lens

Location

The photo was taken at the remote side of a lake called Obersee in Germany, Berchtesgadenerland. Most times you see pictures from the cabin on the other side of the lake, which is quite popular on instagram so most people don't even go to the remote side of this beautiful lake. If you are there - go there! Actually, you should always go a bit further then the crowds.

Time

Indeed it wasn't a specific time of the day I planned to go there. For the first part you have to take a boat, which is why it was not even possible to go there on early morning or whilst evening. I actually havn't been there before so I came along the place on early afternoon. Well, due to steep mountains the sun will disappear quite early, so there was only some sun at the background, which was actually quite cool in my opinion.

Lighting

The lightning wasn't easy because of the steep mountains around the location and the possibilitys to go there. As mentioned before I was not able to plan the time of the day to go there for best lighting. For me, the lighted background makes it something special but that actually was not planned when I decided to go there.

Equipment

For this shot I used my Nikon D5500 with an focal length of 18mm (APSC) in combination with my ND1000 filter to get to smooth water. To realise the shutterspeed of 25s I had to use my tripod and remote control as well. To get the vantage point I have chosen to stay inside of the lake which is not very deep at that point, so my waterproof hiking boots have been perfect to stay for a couple of shots inside the cold lake. Sometimes - like this time - you need someone to keep branches out of your view. Always take someone for this purpose along on your trip ;-)

Inspiration

I have never been there before so I did not plan to take this photo anyway. I just came along this beautiful spot with this lonely boothouse and wasn't like to leave it as fast as I discovered it. It was the place itself which inspired me to take the shot. The feeling around it. After taking several shots I stayed there for a bit longer just to enjoy the whole scenery.

Editing

I used lightroom for some minor corrections of contrast, color and light. In my opinion it's a good representation of the scenerie by now. I don't use photoshop at all, I do not like to change the scenerie or parts of it. Well, I switched from lightroom to CaptureOne Pro by now, but they are both great RAW-converters!

In my camera bag

My bag is always filled with most of my equipment when I go on a trip like I did when I came along the cabin. You never know what to aspect from the day, so I carry my full range of lenses from 18mm to a 600mm. A Sigma 18-250mm (it was my first lens when I started with photography - really need to get another lens for wide angle shots), my Nikon 35mm F1.8 (I really love this one) and 85mm prime lenses and especially for wildlife my Sigma 150-600mm C. Furthermore I use to take my polarization + neutral density (up to ND1000) filters and several step-up rings to mount them on different lenses with me. When it comes to long exposure shots I always have my remote control inside of my bag and some mounting parts for my tripod, which I carry on the outside of my Lowepro FlipsideTrek - the bag I use most. Well, I don't really have to mention the memory cards and battery packs. It is always good to have some equipment like a rope, carabiner or rainprotection to reach special places or keep shooting when it starts to rain.

Feedback

When you stay for longer time it is always good to make some hikes and get to know the surroundings. The locations you find on the internet can be quite nice but they aren't something special you discovered on your own. When you think the place is pretty cool just go a bit further and maybe go back again wen you still think the place was nice. Try to choose a new view and if you have time to go there by morning or during the evening save the gps location of your spot and think about the best time to go there. But even at noon you can can get really awesome atmosphere depending on the weather conditions. You should be flexible in time and location and really never(!) leave your equipment at home - no matter how bad the conditions look. Working with water a neutral density filter can change the whole feeling of your shot. Try it out and decide afterwards if it's worth it to spend more time finding the right shutter speed and location.
