Behind The Lens

Location

The photo was taken from above on a small hill looking down at the valley of Falkenstein. Well most of you definitly won't know that valley - it's near the Donnersberg in Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany. My home-spot for photography trips and outdoorsports in nature.

Time

It was close to sunset on New Year's Day. I strongly remember the bitter cold nights and days that period of winter. Some days and nights before, the night and most time of the day it self it was really misty so there was enough time the mist could freeze over. Due to my late decision of going out to take some photos it became late, dark and cold outside there - but it was overwhelming! I am sur not going to forget this quickly.

Lighting

On account of the mist there wasn't much light at all, but it was a very smooth light. Alltogether, to light and misty landscape created a wonderful mystic scene

Equipment

To get this shot I used my Nikon D5500 with mounted Sigma 150-600mm (C) lens. Normally I wouldhave used my tripod to take the photo. This time it still was at home, hence I used a tree to stabilize the handheld equipment. Not a bad decision if you don't have your tripod along!

Inspiration

It was just the wonderful scenery that day. The white frost and the mist as far as the eye could see - well it was not such a big area you could see before it disappeared in haze. But what you saw that day was spectacular

Editing

I only did some minor post-processing. There rarely was any colour in the photograph so I decided to keep it black&white only. Furthermore I added some more contrast in the foreground to reach more depth.

In my camera bag

Normally I go out there for photography with my Nikon D5500, various lenses and my tripod. I really do like my 150-600mm lens as well as my wide angle lens. I rarely use the focal lenghts between wide angle and telephoto. Combined with my wide angle lens I often use a polarization filter as well as a neutral density filter. Furthermore I always have more than one fully charged batterie and some additional storage in my bag. I recommend to have some waterproof bags with you whereever you go - against rain or as safety when crossing a low/medium tide stream to get the photo you like.

Feedback

Just keep your eyes wide open and always go out with your camera - no matter how the wheater conditions are! When you are out there not only look forward. Turn back, take a look from below and try to get to places you normally would not go. For me photography is not planning as much as you can from home - it will not be as planned! For me photography is going out, living and playing with the possibilities your camera allows you to do. Never stop trying out new things!
