Location
This image was taken after I was tipped off about a Harvest Mouse nest being found in the South West of England.Time
I arrived in position early morning after a four hour drive, I got settled in position for a long wait, and was rewarded early Afternoon.Lighting
This shot was taken under natural lighting conditions.Equipment
I was carrying both my Nikon D7100 and Nikon D500, Considering the light & Subject I was immediately drawn to my Nikon D500, and the size of Harvest Mouse I was faced with, my first choice was my Sigma 105mm f2.8 dedicated macro lens. It was shot hand held because a tripod simply wouldn’t have been practical.Inspiration
I have a bucket list of shots I wanted to take and have collect a lot of contacts that help me scout locations, It was a call out of the blue from someone discovering a nest site, but wasn’t sure if it was active, I immediately packed my equipment ready for the journey. My only thing I would have changed about the shoot...A hard weatherproof case! as I must have experienced every season in just that relatively short moment.Editing
I always shoot in RAW and this occasion was no different, so when I sat down to check what processing needed doing, I was more than pleased when I only needed to adjust the contrast slightly, hence why I added it to the title. In my camera bag
My ‘Normal’ bag content I must start with my two Nikon bodies a D500 & D7100, one day I will replace my D7100 with a Full Frame body but in the meantime it’ll stay in my bag as an emergency 2nd. Onwards to my lenses, I have to start with the 70-200mm f2.8, this is my main go-to lens for everyday no plan shoots, alongside this I have my Sigma 105mm f2.8 macro and Nikon 35mm lens, these two have gotten me out of so many scrapes & deep holes that they deserve medals, The Sigma 105mm is so sharp, there are thoughts that you could actually cut yourself.Feedback
The only advice I can give to anyone wanting to capture similar is planning & Contacts, Reach our to nature groups that are not only in your immediate area, but in the areas that you are happy to travel out to. Draw expanded rings on a map with you being at the centre, colourcode(Importance) and note the times/distance of the rings, That way, if a message or sighting pops up, you will know at a glance and be ready at a moments notice, as the window of opportunity can close as quickly as it opens and Patience, lots and lots of patience, be prepared for every eventuality (and Weather!), also, if it doesn’t happen (and sometimes it doesn’t), don’t get disheartening, we live to fight(and shoot) another day!
