Behind The Lens

Location

This shot was taken at the iconic Yosemite Tunnel View. It is a truly spectacular sight to behold.

Time

This was taken at sunrise. I was here the morning before and it was an overcast sunrise with no fog or color in the sky. I was reluctant to head out there a second time as sunrise was at 6am and I was staying an hour and a half outside the park. I was extremely fortunate that I did!

Lighting

That morning, I headed out at 4.30am and there was light drizzle and heavy clouds. The best I was hoping for was some low level fog amongst the trees. When I got there, my heart sunk as the entire valley was filed with thick fog and visibility was extremely limited. Slowly though, as the sun started rising, the fog started clearing and left this beautiful low level fog that flowed though the trees. As the sun started getting higher, these beautiful vibrant red rays started peaking through and the sky just blew up. There were only four of us there that morning, and I count myself truly lucky to have witnessed such an incredible sunrise. I imagined this is what must have inspired Ansel. It was an awesome experience that I will never forget.

Equipment

This was shot with a Nikon D800 with a 16-35mm f/4 lens at 16mm. I used a Lee FIlter 3 stop ND grad to better mange the dynamic range in the shot.

Inspiration

Tunnel View is definitely a bucket list spot. The best I had hoped for was the iconic view with some low level fog what I got was an unforgettable moment!

Editing

I shoot in RAW and post process in LR/PS. I do 90% of my adjustments in LR and use PS to blend exposures and finish images with NIK Color Efex.

In my camera bag

As a landscape photographer, I love to shoot wide and accentuate the foreground. I use my 16-35mm on the majority of shots. I also use a 24-70mm f/2.8 when I need additional reach and a 70-200 f/4 when I want to shoot details or compress a scene. I also use filters a lot to manage the dynamic range in a scene or to achieve a longer shutter speed or to cut glare. A tripod and simple shutter release cable are also critical.

Feedback

It’s cliched to say but it’s true, you just got to get out there and shoot. 95% of the time the conditions don’t work out, but when they do, it makes the moment that much sweeter.
