Location
This portrait was shot at an old, derelict building that was once used as a laundry house by a railway operator. No doors, no windows, dusty rooms and corridors, flaking paint on the walls... Hope you get the picture.Time
Actually, this was not a perfect time for shooting portraits... A hot, mid-July day around noon, but the building provided both nice, diverse lighting options, and relieved the heat a little.Lighting
The lighting was incident light only. I placed the model in the corridor, with window light being cast through the door openings. Apart from lighting the model's face beautifully, the light and shadows created a rhythm in the background, that I really liked. I used a large reflector placed on the floor to fill some shadows on the model's face.Equipment
The camera used was Canon EOS 5D mark II with a 100 mm 2.8 lens, wide open. Handheld. No other equipment, apart from the reflector I mentioned.Inspiration
This was a pretty spontaneous shoot with a girl referred to me by my cousin. We did not have any specific plan or look that we intended to achieve. We just met, found an interesting location and let the flow take us :) I absolutely love photographing women with no previous modelling experience, since they are always more authentic.Editing
Only global adjustments of contrast, saturation, white balance and some curve adjustments. I do not have my favorite processing style, because I like to work on each image individually, which is prety much an intuitive process, rather than a methodology. In my camera bag
Normally, I carry a single full-frame body, a 50 mm 1.4 and 100 mm 2.8 primes, 24-105 and 17-40 zooms, and a flashgun. On rare occasions I also take a 100-400 zoom. All equipment is Canon brand. This pretty much covers the photography I do. Additionally, there are some accessories, such as remote release, optical paper, a blower, a brush, some rubber bands, foils and transparent plates, and of course spare batteries and flash cards. In the side pocket I also have a small IR-converted compact camera.Feedback
It is always great to find a location that will not only provide a nice bacground for the model, but also give you a nice lighting. In this case, the light and shadow actually build all the mood around the beautiful model, and the mood complements the girl's pose and expression. Also, I love shooting portraits with my lens wide open, because it really creates the depth, concentrates on the model and builds very vislual bacgrounds. First-time models are usually pretty tense and unsure in the beginning, but if you work with them properly, they will reward you with poses and expressions that are rarely attainable from professional, experienced models. I guess, this is a mixture of the residual tension and excitement, when the model actually sees we are getting good results.
