This maple tree is on the east side of Madison Street in Huntsville, AL, across from the Huntsville Hospital emergency room.Time
Midday.Lighting
The wide dynamic range of this photo--from the backlit autumn leaves to the dark bark of the tree--posed an exposure challenge, but it also led to the dramatic colors and tree silhouette. I exposed for the backlit orange leaves.Equipment
I used a handheld Sony NEX-7 with a Zeiss 24 mm f/1.8 lens.Inspiration
I was attracted by the vivid orange-colored leaves, but when I was inspired by the dramatic view from under the shady canopy of the tree.Editing
I darken the dark portions of the tree to accentuate the contrast with the bright leaves. In my camera bag
When I took this photo, I was traveling light, with only the NEX-7, mounted 24 mm lens, lens brush, and wireless remote in my bag. I still try to minimize the weight of the bag I carry. Today, I typically take my Sony A7RIII and the lens I believe will be most suitable for the anticipated photo opportunity, and place camera and mounted lens in a holster bag sized for the combo. Other items in the bag: extra battery, pen and paper, lens brush, and wireless remote. I use a backpack when more than one lens is needed.Feedback
Take time to look around. The obvious photo was a side shot showing the brilliantly colored maple in the sunshine. If I rushed to take that shot, I would have missed this one. Walking around the tree revealed the dramatic view I captured when I looked up from underneath the branches in the shadow of the leaves.
