Location
This image was taken along Willapa Bay a salt water body of water just off the Pacific ocean near the small fishing village of Bay Center.Time
The sun was setting at 5:55PM on a mid September eveningLighting
The low sun light and calm winds made for a great photography moment when I saw this craft docked along the bay shore. The sky was partly cloudy and with the sun going down showered light across the clouds in the sky highlighting the billowing cloud formations in the background. The calmness of the evening and the available light made for a great reflection shot as well giving the composition an even more appealing sense of mystery to the shot.Equipment
Used a Nikon D750 DLSR for this capture with a Nikkor 24-120mm lens at 38mm, the shot was taken at 1/160 of a second at F-7.1 at 100 ISO. This image was hand held, no flash was used and to stabilize myself I knelt down with my elbows tight to my body.Inspiration
The thing that drew me to this vessel was the reflection in the foreground, desolation of the docked ship all alone, the evening colors from the sun setting and the billowing clouds in the background. I shot from several different locations around the scene and this particular angle stood out in the end.Editing
I always post process as I shoot in manual and RAW. I used a typical workflow of starting in Lightroom with the basic adjustments then migrating into Photoshop where I used a curves layer, detail layer, dynamics layer, color layer with some sky enhancements, some sensor dust removal layer, texture layer that I brushed into the ship only, some dodging & burning layer and finally a slight vignette layer. I then merged back into Lightroom for final touch ups, sharpening and saving. In my camera bag
I carry a lot of equipment with me overtime I am in my car, 2 camera's, many batteries, cleaning devices and materials, flashlight, remote shutter release, try-pod, flash, and several different lenses. I typically have two bags full of equipment ready to shoot any type of scene.Feedback
Always be ready and have all your equipment with you all the time, I saw this vessel earlier in the day and decided that an evening shot would be much more pleasant therefore I returned to the location at sun down. Always be on the lookout for interesting captures and don't be afraid to stop and scope out the scene. Even more importantly asses the scene and make the decision to shoot now or at another time for the best results, most importantly is to have some fun with it all.
