Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken at an amazing Airbnb rental location just outside of Arrowtown, New Zealand. The farmer had constructed his own house and guesthouse out of stone and timber over the last few decades. This door led to the pool area and was quite amazing!

Time

Right before we left on an excursion one morning, I decided I needed to take a picture of this door for safe-keeping in my brain bank. Little did I know, it would end up being one of my favorite pictures!

Lighting

The sun was shining high and bright, the typical New Zealand cloud was a bit present as well.

Equipment

This was shot on a Canon 7D.

Inspiration

The amazingness of a hand-built door/home needed to be documented, as I'd love to build something like this someday!

Editing

This image was shot in 3 brackets and postprocessed in Photomatix Pro with final touch ups in Lightroom.

In my camera bag

I always have a tripod, I was caught too many times travelling in low-light conditions that I learned my lesson. It's the first thing I strap to the bag. The remainder of the contents include a wide angle lens (Canon EF-S 10-22mm), a mid range Sigma 17-70mm and telephoto Sigma 70-200 f/2.8. These three cover much of the range I need. Other accessories include an intervalometer, wireless remote for those quick candid "I was here" shots, 4 spare memory cards , 2 spare batteries, a 2 TB hard drive and all the cables needed to make it all talk. I've also been carrying a GoPro with a hotshoe mount on the camera for some unique video capabilities.

Feedback

My best advise is to get out a shoot, ALL THE TIME. Learn your camera, memorize the buttons, learn the theory of light. And finally, be at the right place at the right time, getting stellar photos generally takes effort, sometimes it doesn't. Also, take LOTS of pictures, even of things you might not think would be a very interesting subject, sometimes, like this door, they surprise you.
