Behind The Lens

Location

This is one of a series I shot with Christine Adams, in Topanga Park, Los Angeles.

Time

We'd found a wonderful old cabin off the main road heading up into the valley. We arrived at around 3pm and shot until dark. This was towards the end of the shoot at around 5pm.

Lighting

I only shoot with natural light so it's very important for me to find the right location that creates the effect I need. The cabin was set in a deep forest but had streaks of sunlight bursting through. Perfect for me!

Equipment

Camera: NIKON D610 with a fixed 50m 1.4. Aperture: f/4, ISO: 640, Exposure: 1/125, Focal Length: 350/10.

Inspiration

I do love shooting stories and knowing Christine as a very professional nude model, I wanted to tell the story of her living in this cabin, relaxed and free.

Editing

I do very little retouching on any of my shots - I prefer to keep the models as natural as the come - but I do spend time on grading.

In my camera bag

Other than my fixed 50mm, I do have a wide-angle and a 70-200mm but rarely use them. I do carry a small reflector but that is gathering dust as well!

Feedback

For me, location is key. I never shoot in studios as telling stories don't work. Airbnb.com is a great resource for finding a great location as well as old motels/hotels. I sometimes bring props with me to create a shot; an old telephone, an old tv or radio, an interesting book or magazine for the model to read, a cool looking alcohol bottle for the table. Anything that gives a shot a little bit of a difference.
