Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken in the harbor of Philipsburg St. Maarten

Time

This photo was taken around 2 pm.

Lighting

The sun was out of a clear day. It really added to the tropical feeling of this shot.

Equipment

I used a canon t3i with the 50mm f1.4 canon lens

Inspiration

I was just getting off of a cruise ship and this was the first thing I saw. I marveled at the beauty of the situation and knew I just had to capture this memory.

Editing

The only real post processing I do to my photos is a lighting adjustment to make sure the colors and lighting are balanced. I do most of my editing in camera raw. I am a firm believer that a photo taken correctly in the first place is more impressive than one that has been extensively post-processed. I try to avoid adding too many adjustments whenever possible.

In my camera bag

I recently upgraded to a canon 7D. I usually carry all 3 of my older EOS lenses. (The newer Standard kit lens that I rarely use, the 75-300mm canon f/3.5, and the 50mm f/1.4). When I upgraded my camera, I also got a great deal on a Tamron 10-24mm f/3.4 lens. I find it is really useful for videography. I can also get some really cool landscapes with the wide angle so it may be my new favorite.

Feedback

Feel the moment. When you see an opportunity like the one in this photo, take it. I feel that you can understand my sense of wonder in this photo. It was the first time I ever had a chance to visit the Caribbean. Every time we got off at port it was another new adventure. Also, don't be afraid to experiment. I notice that this photo doesn't really follow the rules of balance but I feel that the fact that it doesn't follow the conventional formula of a photo adds drama. Lastly, do what you love. I took over 1000 pictures while I was on his trip. Taking the photos was more fun than putting them on the internet for everyone to see. If you really enjoy getting out, experiencing the world, and firing your shutter, you will find your own style. Sometimes our best photos are our biggest mistakes. Taking those mistakes, learning from them, and replicating them leads us to find our own style. Get out there, experiment, break the rules, and have fun.
