Behind The Lens

Location

I took it on a family outing with my wife and my daughter with her family. It was over the 4th of July week several years ago at Ricketts Glenn Park.

Time

It was some time around noon time that we got to this falls. It took us about 6 to 7 hours to walk all the top falls trail loop. It was a very enjoyable hike. There are some places that you have to be very careful because of rocks and slickness.

Lighting

I think that it is worth the trip to go see and photograph. At the time I was not into pics as I am now but I love to see what nature gives for the looking and what she can show what she can do to the other things that nature has put in the way that has to be worn away or moved. The way that the falls are, Lighting shouldn't be too much of a problem. Falls are mostly southerly.

Equipment

At the time, I used a Pentax K-50 with a 18-55 kit lense. I found that the auto focuser is noisy compared to Nikon, so I upgraded to Nikon D 5500. I don't think that the quality of pictures are any different, but I do notice that the animals don't look at me when I use the auto focus now. I like my water shots to be nice and sharp, so I didn't use a tripod.

Inspiration

The reason I took this shot is because I liked the falls and I wanted to show the perspective of just how large the falls really are. I also liked the way the people gave the falls a little warmth to it. I think that people add something to a photo, no matter what the photo is of.

Editing

no, I didn't do any post on this pic. The only thing I might have done if any, is convert it from raw to jpeg.

In my camera bag

I usually have a D-5500 Nikon with a 18 to 105. Then I have a 40mm micro lense and a 50 - 300mm lenses. I also have a battery charger, lense cleaning kit, 3 extra batteries. I also have extra cards and an external flash.

Feedback

If you are trying for silky water, use a tri-pod, go for iso of low numbers (100-200). Then use a longer shutter speed like .5- 2 sec. if you can do it without getting a blowout. If you have a filter to darken the water, do that also.
