Behind The Lens

Location

This was taken in Bodie, Ca. An old mining town, now ghost town, in the high desert in the Sierra Nevadas. I was on a photography trip through the region back in 2011 I believe.

Time

This was taken in mid afternoon. The sun had just begun to fall from the top of the sky giving the great shadows that you see in the image. It also makes everything less contrasty and more warm.

Lighting

I love shooting at this time of the day; between 2pm and sunset. The light is naturally around 5-6k on the Kelvin scale making it very warm and naturally pleasing to the human eye. Since the sun is at an angle it also creates those fantastic shadows adding depth as interest to the shot.

Equipment

This was taken with a Canon Rebel XS, no flash, no tripod, just the good ole fashioned hand hold.

Inspiration

I love the old west. I also like trying to take pictures that tell a story. There’s just something so interesting about abandoned buildings or areas forgotten in time.

Editing

There is not much post processing in this photo. I try to only use images that had the proper exposure. I think I added a yellow filter and bumped up the saturation/contrast to combat the degradation naturally caused by the lens.

In my camera bag

I have switched cameras since this but now shoot with a Canon 5d mark 2, 24-105 F4 L and 70-200 USM 2.8 are my current favorites. I have a few other lenses but they are not as versatile.

Feedback

Just keep shooting and traveling. However, you do not need to find new places every time. This specific image was taken on my third trip to Bodie. Just always keep your mind open and keep looking for different angles. You never know how you are going to like it until you take the picture. So keep shooting :) as Ansel Adams said (paraphrased of course) you have to take 10,000 shots to get one good image.
