Location
This shot was taken in the gardens at the Old Binda mill (near Crookwell) NSW Australia, I came across this place years ago when photographing a wedding and kept it in mind for another shoot. It also houses an old 3 story building (the mill) which has long been converted into a beautiful home.Time
If I remember correctly it was around 3pm, normal I would never shoot this early in the harsh Australian sunlight but the property has a large canopy of trees and provides excellent shade, Here we were under a massive willow tree. I remember it was over 37 degrees that day (100f) and it also provided some relief from the heat.Lighting
Apart from the defused sunlight I used a portable strobe and a softbox to camera left to lift some shadows and give a little kick but only around 1 stop more than ambient light as I didn't want the strobe to be evident but just enough to provide some separation.Equipment
Camera was the Canon 1Ds Mk3, lens is Canon 70 200 f2.8 IS, shot at F4.0 or there about . Also used an location Godox strobe with a large size softbox.Inspiration
Inspiration was simply summer, my part of Australia which is the southern tablelands of NSW has quite a short summer period compared to the rest of the country and we even get snow sometimes so we tend to make the most of the sun .Editing
The only processing done was in lightroom with some colour correction and a couple of minor blemishes removed. The model Jasmine-Lee has amazing skin and features which makes post processing a breeze. She is also a wiz with makeup which saves on the need for a makeup artist. In my camera bag
Well put it this way I have an XXXXL bag and the other day when trying to lift it into the car I tore the handle of it from sheer weight. but in short I carry 2 X camera bodies, 5 lenses, 2 X on camera flash units light meter, copious amounts of triggers, cokin filters, remote releases, batteries, batteries, batteries and the list goes on. I really have no Idea why I have so much gear in my bag and I'm sure with a little planing I could cut it in half.Feedback
Planning ahed is the best advice I can offer . Having a project and sticking to a plan always yields the best images ,yes sometimes you can be lucky with a grab shot but I find my best images are always planned. Having a well organised model who is reliable is a god send which if you look at my profile will notice I tend to use the same 5 models for that reason. Check the weather and make provisions for a plan No2. 99% of the time I shoot into the sun and use flash to gain correct exposure I think this comes from living in one of the harshest climates on earth where shadows are a real killer. I never look through the viewfinder without seeing something beautiful. I love my job.
