Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken on the east side of Mobile Bay, near the Fairhope Municipal Pier in Fairhope, AL. There is a nice walking trail that runs about a mile from the south end of pier park to a bluff that overlooks the bay. This is a pretty scenic area, so I always try to carry a camera with me when we visit it.

Time

I took this photo on an October evening. My wife and I had decided to take a walk to enjoy the sunset and fresh air. She was seven months pregnant at the time, so we knew it would be one of the last opportunities we would have to spend some quiet time together.

Lighting

I was really worried that the setting sun would overpower the sensor on my point and shoot, fortunately it didn't the image turned out better than I could have hoped.

Equipment

I used a Canon PowerShot SX260 HS point and shoot camera to capture this photo. No other equipment was used.

Inspiration

I really wanted to capture the beautiful reds and oranges of the setting sun, and I knew that I would only have a few seconds to get the perfect shot before the sun dipped out of view. There are all these beautiful trees with Spanish Moss along the walking path, and I was able to find one whose limbs framed the setting sun perfectly.

Editing

I don't do a lot of heavy post processing as I am still very much an amateur photographer. I did apply a filter using Analog for Mac on this image.

In my camera bag

I still carry my SX260 HS with me everywhere, but I also now have a Nikon D3300 with an additional 35mm prime lens. I also carry a monopod and some assorted filters.

Feedback

Make sure to scout out your target shooting area in advance, so you're not trying to find that "perfect" frame spot at the last minute. I lucked into this particular spot, but I know I won't always be so lucky.
