This photo was taken at my son's baseball game when he was six. It was a summer day in Southern California and these kids (their league's all-stars that season) had spent several weeks battling in competitive tournaments, but more importantly, bonding and making friendships that were to last for years afterwards. That's why this has always been one of my favorite shots I've ever taken. It's the moment in time, now frozen forever, that really matters.Time
It was early afternoon on a warm summer day.Lighting
The lighting here is all natural, golden California sun.Equipment
I take a lot of my shots with a Nikon, but not this one. I snapped this pic with my cell phone. The great thing about rapid advances in cell phone cameras is that we're now able to get great spur of the moment shots without having our camera bag on hand.Inspiration
I saw a moment that represented what my son's life was at the time. It wasn't just playing baseball. It was playing baseball with these kids. His friends. His team. Seeing them all lined up like that, all expectantly watching the action on the field, all anxious to share something together, was beautiful. I was just glad I was able to capture it.Editing
I didn't do any post-processing with this picture. I didn't even crop it.In my camera bag
I shoot with a Nikon D3200, and almost always use a 70-200mm zoom. Though I love a wide lens shot, the kind of things I usually capture require the mobility of a zoom. However, in the case of this shot, it wasn't what was in my bag that did the trick. It was the cell phone in my pocket that I was able to get out and snap a shot with before the shot disappeared. At times, it's more about ease and accessibility that a whole bag of tricks.Feedback
Look for the moment, and try to capture it honestly. If I'd gotten too clever with framing or tried to orchestrate a pose rather than simply snapping a picture of what was right before my eyes, it wouldn't have worked. I saw something that evoked emotion and I recorded it. Simple as that.
